JUNE 8 MOBILE WORKSHOPS

The Riverfront Symposium will feature the following six mobile, outdoor workshops, which will take place from roughly
1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on June 8.*

1. Walking Tour: City of Harrisburg's Parks, Restaurants and Historic Neighborhoods
2. Bike Tour: Capital Area Greenbelt (with interpretive discussions)
3. Nature Tour: Wildwood Lake Sanctuary and Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center
4. Susquehanna Birding and Water Trail Canoe Trip
5. Driving Tour: Rivertownes PA USA (Lancaster and York Counties: Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville)
6. Redevelopment Tour: Steelton

* Please note that the Canoe Trip timeframe will be 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Harrisburg Walking Tour
Join us for this interesting and informative tour of Harrisburg including City Island, Riverfront Park, Broad Street Market, State Capitol Building, Shipoke and Restaurant Row. The City’s Director of Parks and Recreation, Tina Manoogian-King, will lead this tour featuring discussions on flooding, conservation, recreation, economic development, tourism and greenways. The complete walking tour will cover about 3.5 miles, with an option for a shorter walk. Participants should plan to wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, dress in layers, and bring a rain jacket and their camera.

Capital Area Greenbelt Bicycle Tour
Tour a 15-mile section of the Capital Area Greenbelt starting at the City Island Bike Shop, featuring the Wildwood Lake Sanctuary, five senses garden and the Riverfront park. John Quimby from the Capital Area Greenbelt Association will lead the trip featuring informal discussions about recreation, tourism, greenways and a historical perspective. Bicycle rentals are available for about $15.00. Participants should plan to wear comfortable clothes for cycling, dress in layers and bring a rain jacket.

Nature Tour
Take a guided tour of the Wildwood Lake and Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center and grounds, including tours of the grounds (3-mile walking loop), the nature center and wildlife viewing area. Sandy Lockerman, Environmental Educator at the park, will lead the tour.

Susquehanna Birding and Water Trail Canoe Trip
Join the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for a guided 8-mile canoe trip from Marysville, Pa., to Harrisburg’s City Island on a portion the Susquehanna River Water Trail. The tour will include stops along the trail highlighting water resources, conservation, tourism, recreation and greenways. Rental canoes and transportation will be provided. Participants should plan to wear comfortable clothes for canoeing, dress in layers and bring a rain jacket.

1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Outfit participants with equipment and walk to launch site
1:45 p.m. Safety presentation
2:00 p.m. River Recreation Trends presentation
2:10 p.m. River Trail Introduction presentation
2:15 p.m. Canoe Launch
3:00 p.m. Birding Rookery and River Features presentation
3:45 p.m. Stop and snack at island campsite
4:40 p.m. Independence Island, presentations on:
. Susquehanna Greenway and Greenbelt
. PA Water Trail Program
5:30 p.m. Off water at West Fairview and shuttle transport back to hotel

Rivertownes PA USA Tour
Come discover Columbia, Pa., which almost became the location for our nation’s capitol? Join us for a fascinating driving tour of the Rivertownes PA USA program featuring this and other interesting information as participants explore Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. This guided tour will visit community restoration, recreation and revitalization projects, including the Vesta Office Building in Marietta; the National Watch and Clock Collector’s Museum and River Park in Columbia; Susquehanna Riverlands and Overlook, Lancaster-York Heritage Region Office, Shank’s Mare and the John Wright Store and Restaurant. This interesting and educational tour will also feature historic information about the bridge burning during the Civil War, lime kilns and the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal. Participants should plan to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.

Steelton Redevelopment Tour
This field trip will feature a tour of the Steelton redevelopment project in conjunction with the Hands-On Training “Designing a Rivertown” tract.
