creek image

White Hollow near Wellsburg, N.Y., had a slightly impaired macroinvertebrate community in 2009 for the second consecutive year. The biological community at WHIT scored extremely well in the Hilsenhoff Index, suggesting that the community is not being impacted adversely by organic pollution. However, WHIT scored poorly in taxonomic richness, EPT Index, and percent dominant taxa. The physical habitat at WHIT was rated excellent in 2009, due to excellent instream cover, riparian vegetative zone width, and little channel alteration. All field chemistry parameters were within acceptable limits at the time of sampling. WHIT displays a stream channel profile typical of Group 3 streams in this region, with a large, blown out channel strewn with cobble and woody debris. WHIT is a high gradient stream with cascading riffles and pools located in a mainly forested watershed.
