Demonstration Site Monitoring

All 5 Demonstration Sites underwent pre-restoration habitat assessments. The stream, soils, and surrounding vegetation were all evaluated to monitor improvements after implementing stormwater management practices.

State Police Site: SRBC staff are characterizing flows and sediment transport during/after rain events using a weir and stilling well.

Weir with 5 inches of sediment
Stilling Well before storm events (2) and after covered with 5 inches of sediment

Vegetation Inventory At All Sites: Existing vegetation was identified and inventoried. The diameter of each tree and the amount of invasive vegetation was cataloged. At the Capitol View Commerce demonstration site, almost half of the vegetation on site was composed of invasive species.
Large impervious surface areas contribute to the eroded stream banks and increased sediment loads. During pre-restoration habitat assessments, bank-full, bank height, and bank width measurements were recorded. These measurements will be used to quantify any bank stabilization that occurs with proper stormwater management. Park Erosion
At the Centennial Acres residential development, properties belonging to volunteer households were surveyed to measure the slope at which rain water is traveling to the creek. Steep slopes, without rain water capture systems, can send fast moving water straight to the creek and cause eroded banks and increased sediment loads.
