WATER STORAGE PROJECTS

SUSQUEHANNA RIVER BASIN COMPACT
"The commission shall have power to acquire, construct, operate, and control projects and facilities for the storage and release of waters for the regulation of flows and supplies of surface and ground waters of the basin, for the protection of public health, stream quality control, economic development, improvement of fisheries, recreation, dilution and abatement of pollution, the prevention of undue salinity, and other purposes."
Section 4.2(a) of the Susquehanna River Basin Compact, P.L. 91-575; 84 Stat. 1509 et seq.

SRBC has been developing water supply storage capacity at key reservoirs in the Susquehanna basin for release during times of low flows. Low flow events often impact the basin's aquatic habitat, limit recreational activities, and affect downstream water users. SRBC currently has about 30,000 acre-feet of water storage available from two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' flood control dams in Pennsylvania:

  • Cowanesque Lake Reservoir, Tioga County, Pa.

  • Curwensville Lake Reservoir, Clearfield County, Pa.

At both facilities, recreational opportunities have been enhanced as a result of the water storage projects. Additional storage is currently under construction at Whitney Point Lake, Broome County, N.Y.
