Commissioner's Column

Senator James Seward welcomes commissioners to Cooperstown.

The Commission was pleased to have N.Y. State Senator James Seward welcome the commissioners and staff to his district that includes the beautiful Otsego Lake - the source of the Susquehanna River. Senator Seward highlighted the many historical, scenic and recreational attractions of the Cooperstown area. He also commended the Commission for the important work that it does in water resources management, and for greatly enhancing the lines of communications with elected officials in recent years.

Dr. Willard Harman, Professor and Director, Biological Field Station at SUNY Oneonta, provided a detailed and informative presentation on the work of his field station to protect Otsego Lake. Much of the work involves reaching out to the lakeshore communities and educating their residents on best management practices to reduce or prevent pollution.

Due to developing drought conditions at the time in some parts of the basin, Commission staff provided a more detailed report of hydrologic conditions. Mike Brownell, Water Resources Management Division Chief, also reported that staff had activated the Interagency Drought Coordination Committee. This is a technical committee comprised of representatives from the Commission's four members, and is convened as needed to share information on emerging drought conditions and discuss what, if any, drought response actions might be contemplated to promote coordinated action among the basin states.
