Basin Flood Warning System Updates
Using information from the National Weather Service, SRBC
has cataloged many of the 2005 flooding events in the Susquehanna basin,
including the flash flooding caused by the remnants of tropical storms Cindy
and Tammy. Below is a summary of the major flooding that took place between
April 2-4 in the upper and eastern portions of the basin following heavy rain
events combined with snow melt:
- Broome County, N.Y. — 2 flood-related fatalities, 100 plus people evacuated,
$3-$4 million estimated damages
- Chenango County, N.Y. — 250 homes and 10 businesses flooded, 100 plus people
evacuated, $3 million estimated damages
- Cortland County, N.Y. — 500-700 homes and businesses flooded, 4 bridges
destroyed, 100 plus people evacuated, about $15 million estimated damages
- Tioga County, N.Y. — 350 homes and 4 businesses flooded, 250 estimated
evacuations, $3 million estimated damages
- Bradford County, Pa. — 200 plus homes and 3 businesses flooded, 50 evacuated,
$1 million estimated damages, declared Federal Disaster Area by FEMA
- Luzerne County, Pa. — 150-200 homes and 25 businesses flooded, $1.5
million estimated damages, declared Federal Disaster Area by FEMA
