Headwaters River Trail Partnership
Rivers once served as the principle transportation routes in the headwaters of the Susquehanna basin, connecting people to neighboring communities, supplies, and markets. Although the role of rivers has changed over time, a new partnership is working to restore people's connections to the rivers and to encourage the leisurely perspective of traveling by water. The Headwaters River Trail is an ambitious project that encompasses five rivers: the mainstem of the Susquehanna River in New York and the Chenango, Tioughnioga, Otselic, and Unadilla Rivers. Although it is separated from the Chesapeake Bay by hundreds of river miles, the Headwaters River Trail has been accepted into the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network. The partnership conducted an initial inventory of assets, which include boat launches, fishing access, walking trails, parks, museums, historic landmarks, cultural features, tourist attractions, and educational opportunities. Building on these assets, the trail will connect communities along 328 miles of river in six New York counties. The board of directors, local working groups, and other partners will facilitate and encourage environmentally responsible recreation on the rivers and islands. While they're having fun, water trail users will also be cultivating an appreciation of river history, economy, and the natural and built environment. This will lead to more responsible stewardship of the river systems. For questions or to volunteer, contact Kevin Millar, 607-687-3263, kjmilow@yahoo.com |
