SRBC HOLDS QUARTERLY MEETING, APPROVES WATER USE AND WITHDRAWAL PROJECTS, ADOPTS REGULATORY CHANGES AFFECTING NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY

On September 10, SRBC held its quarterly business meeting in North East, Md.  Among its activities, SRBC voted on regulatory, policy and administrative matters; presented updates on Susquehanna basin hydrologic conditions, Maryland Lt. Governor’s Water Summit, and legal issues; conducted a panel session on priority management areas for ecosystems and the Chesapeake Bay; and presented the William W. Jeanes, Sr. Award for Environmental Excellence to The Nature Conservancy.

SRBC’s voting commissioners and alternates were: Col. Peter DeLuca, SRBC Chair, Commander, North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Dr. Robert Summers, Deputy Secretary, Md. Department of the Environment; Kenneth Lynch, Director, Region 7, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation; and Susan Weaver, Chief, Water Use Planning Division, Pa. Department of Environmental Protection.

The commissioners voted, under the public hearing portion of the meeting, on applications for numerous water resources projects (see list of approved projects below) and compliance actions involving settlements with Allegheny Energy Supply Company, LLC and UGI Development Company (Hunlock Power Station, Unit 4) and Chief Oil & Gas LLC.

The commissioners also approved: (1) final rulemaking regarding the use of SRBC-approved water sources for natural gas well development and clarifying administrative procedures; (2) new Access to Records Policy; and (3) several grants regarding surface water assessments, total maximum daily loads, State of the Susquehanna project and Susquehanna Flood Forecast and Warning System.
